I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I understand that she has freedom of speech. However, I do NOT believe that religion and laws should meet. Does anyone remember separation of church and state? If she personally believes that homosexuality is immoral because of her religious beliefs, fine. However, just because SHE believes that does not mean the rest of us have to. It really bugs me when I read comments on stories like this that say, for example, "I am 100% proud of Ms. Prejean! It is nice and refreshing to see a woman stand with courage and by principle and not tolerance of such an immoral lifestyle! God Bless Ms. Prejean and Amendment 8!!!!!!"
Ok, notice the "God Bless." It just infuriates me. As a country, we are denying civil rights to a select group of people because of bigotry and using religion as a shield. Why is homosexuality immoral? There were gay people in the bible. Most religious fanatics use animals and reproduction as an excuse if the bible excuse doesn't work. Ok, let's analyze that. There are gay animals in nature. As proved by: http://tinyurl.com/44fst.
Now, let's tackle reproduction. That doesn't fly with me either. This is because there are unwanted children being born that people can adopt. There are heterosexual couples who cannot have children, yet they are still married. I don't see the reproductive aspect of it being a problem. Technology is advancing rapidly. There are same sex couples who do what heterosexual couples do when they can't have children, they either adopt or have a surrogate.
We are alienating these people just like we alienated African Americans after slavery was abolished. The only difference really is that gay people are allowed to vote. They are discriminated against in every possible way. I have friends who are very dear to me who cannot get married or even see each other in the hospital if something extremely terrible happened because Georgia is full of religious people whose goal is to make everyone believe what they believe and involve church in state.
